Confusingly they come in almost limitless combinations of type, size and features, all geared to different applications. Or, if you have an Oregon chain in an Oregon box, the drive link count is stamped on the flap; you can save that flap for future reference.

Unlike with Stihl, the Husqvarna chain numbers have no understandable code they do not directly tell the pitch, gauge, or anything else.

If you can pull the whole chain away from the chain bar and the chain links are no longer engaged you know you will need to increase the tension on the chainsaw. In addition, the same model saw may have different size chains factory installed during different production periods, or even the same production period. It is like putting shark teeth on a piranha the bite will not get any better. Usually, a larger pitch chain will have larger teeth that take bigger cuts out of the wood. The gauge of the chain and the gauge of the bar must match. Low profile chains are the best for beginner chainsaw users.
