We then headed down the Needle's Eye stairs, which I would not recommend for those who are faint of heart or not experienced hikers. Follow the brown signs. After 0.25 miles into the hike you will pass Balanced Rock (on left) an unusual rock formation where one rock appears balanced on the other. This route is one of the shorter and more popular routes, if you are uncomfortable walking up Balanced Rock trail, consider hiking this route in reverse. Arrive at the Hemlock Lodge and the Hemlock Lodge Parking Area. From the Hemlock Lodge Parking Area, walk past the Hemlock Lodge and past the trailhead for the Original Trail to Natural Bridge. Great people and the best standards in the business. Be careful around the edges, and keep a close eye on children. This trail was well maintained and though it was steep, there were plenty of railings. Some trails have guardrails and protections in place, but (thankfully) Natural Bridge was kept natural! Both campgrounds support RV and tent camping, have shower facilities, and are pet friendly. At only a half mile in length, this trail is deceptively strenuous and challenging, but well worth the effort. Take I-64 East to Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway (exit 98). Starting here, the trail is 1 mile long and traverses a very strenuous and near vertical 700 feet in elevation gain. Parts of it are a little dull for a small child, but that all changes once you reach the bridge. Its worth the extra hike (about another - mi) around past the ski lift and on to another outcropping to get a good view of it, as you dont see the bridge at all on the hike up until youre literally right underneath it.
