I was told the ridge that hosts the 9th, 12th and 16th tee boxes is the highest point in Collier County. Tipping out at less than 300 yards, this par four is plenty reachable, however the hole does climb uphill which makes it play longer than the yardage may suggest.
There are elevated tees and a couple of elevated greens. The bunkers are pretty much gravel.
Lots of room off the tee but the course really bares its teeth on and around the greens. If you aren't totally dialed in with your wedge, playing a Texas wedge may be your best chance to avoid further embarrassment. The staff is fantastic and friendly. Any shot to get on take it. The fairway is very wide with a few rumples in it hitting to a very wide and deep green.
The tenth hole has a green hard against a hill on the right almost hidden from the tee. PV is a mean golf course with trouble 5 feet off of every fairway so this is a bit different, but no picnic to say the least.
Chensoff decided to gamble, instructing Hurdzan-Fry to design the most unique course in south Florida despite a dead flat site.

If one can get a game here, they should jump at the opportunity. The earth movement that went on while creating Calusa Pines is on full display here with bunkering climbing 30+ feet in elevation on the left side of the fairway and provides a daunting obstacle to avoid.
I have not played Seminole or Sawgrass yet, but the variety of holes and the risk/reward opportunities offered by Hurdzdan/Fry make this for a great round of golf.
One has to come in from the center of the fairway because if the tee shot is struck too far left it is a difficult angle requiring a carry over a bunker on the left or one brings the water into consideration. One tries to drive as to the left side of the fairway for a slightly better view of the green and as close as possible to the bunker next to the water on the left to avoid a 200- yard shot into a very long, tiered green with hollows in it. This course underwent a true transformation. I like how this hole distorts the type of shot one is required to hit. Despite the massive bunker complex up the left, plenty of fairway is offered up the center and right sides of the hole to hit which will set up a short chip to the green. I consider this one of the absolute best courses in our state. The greens are tough to hit, the aprons around the greens are undulating / punishing and the shaping on the putting surfaces is a massive test. The course features a lot of raised greens but also lots of short grass, making it playable for almost all levels of golfer.
Birdie Time: 8th Hole 291 Yard Par 4 The 8th hole is an exciting offering that players should come to licking their chops.

The third hole is a favorite, a par 3 of 155/135 with a bail-out area to the right but deep and tall bunkers on the entire left and a fall-off at the back. The second hole is a long par 5 of 574/551 going in the opposite direction as a slight dogleg right. The large elevation drop to the fairway magnifies your yardage and any mistakes in accuracy, so it is critical to get safely off the box to start.

Just a beautiful design with elevation changes unknown to Florida and the million dollar cost on dynamite is completely understandable after walking the course. When I played I last year, I wondered to myself if it would overtake the Stadium Course as my favorite course in Florida.

Missing this green anywhere leaves a very delicate shot. The par 4 14th is relatively short. Ranked inside the top 10, 2005. If one wants a penal/more difficult golf course than the TPC Stadium course would have an edge due to its incorporation of water on many holes, particularly due to the green hard against the water on the memorable sixteenth hole, the seventeenth island green and the tough driving hole over water on eighteen. Absolute must play if you get a chance!

", One of the best in Florida. There is good variety in the length of the holes whether a par 3, 4 or 5. If you like eye-candy over architecture, you'll rate this higher than Seminole. This is one of the better short par 4s one will play. Down the entire left side of the fairway from tee to green is sand. The left side of the fairway is flanked by a lake and stands as a constant reminder to not get overly aggressive with your swing and yank your Pro V1 into a watery grave. Of the longer holes, the most interesting are those around the hill as well as the cross-lake par four 9th and the strong and open 5th, which features an elevated target guarded by sand and slopes.. Excellent golf course. The routing is unemcurberred by housing or commercial development which creates a sanctuary like feeling with gators, birds, and wildlife scattered throughout the property which effectively creates a setting of true sport and serenity. Calusa Pines is your typical Hurdzan/Fry with wide fairways, raised greens, and gigantic bunkers.
The planting of more than 100 mature Oak trees alongside indigenous Sable palms and mature pines has created maturity way beyond its 2001 birth date. Bogey Beware: 12th Hole 468 Yard Par 4 From the highest point in Collier County, the tee shot on the 12th is half inspiring half intimidating.
It is certainly worthy of being considered a top 100 golf course in the USA, although currently there is a bias favoring more natural/less difficult golf courses. The approach shot plays to a deep but narrow green with a bunker on the left that sits between the putting surface and the water.
The green is deep enough to hold most approach shots and has numerous subtle breaks.

The green sits at the bottom of another small hill and slopes substantially back to front.
The only structures visible while playing the course are the clubhouse and cottages, a rarity for Florida.
I find the first hole to be one of the more difficult holes on the golf course, a par 4 of 421/389 with a long bunker on the left to an elevated green positioned on the left and a high, wide bunker fronting most of the green. On a course full of great shot opportunities to execute, the 16th provides the most heroic swing of the day and one you won't soon forget.
Brooks Cruise ship landed at 0700. This completes a challenging front nine with superb green shapes.
My favorite holes include the cape style 4th, the uphill driveable 8th, and the 11th which is a great template of 16 at Augusta. The course is perched on the highest land point in south Florida. The 400 plus yard par 4 5th surprised me, as it has large bunkers behind the green. The membership is rather exclusive and filled with a decent number of professionals. Calusa is also an enjoyable course for high handicaps. I had two approach shots land 12 ft from pin with spin that rolled off green into rough. In the middle of suburbia--if you didn't golf, you wouldn't know its there. Small membership, tough to get on, but worth the effort if you can.
A delight to experience. Signature Hole: 16th Hole 185 Yard Par 3 This is just a flat out beautiful hole. As if the greens were not difficult enough, the fourth hole has one of the trickier ones, a par 4 of 464/409 that one should try to come into the green as straight as possible but avoiding the water down most of the right side but this requires one to carry the water to reach the fairway.
Despite having lost 776 trees in last years hurricane, the course survived at a very high level. .
However, hitting from this bunker is not much of an issue. There is one waste area that is supposedly nine acres and the eighth hole has a bunker that is over 25 feet tall.
A first-rate experience all around if you're lucky enough to know a member -- this is a very tough get. Eight is a short par 4 and visually one of the best-looking holes from the tee on the course with a hill down the right and sand down all of the left.
Routing the course towards this large sand dune is a work of art and elevates this pristinely maintained course among best in the country. They responded by piling up fill from ponds to form ridge lines up to 58 feet, then planted them with mature oaks, pines and sabal palms. Nine plays from an elevated tee with a nice view of the clubhouse to the left.
", More elevation change than most Florida courses. Calusa is blessed with a unique topography, which really rolls in places including a dramatic panoramic downhill par 3. The green is very quick. The par threes were memorable, especially the short third hole. The green is very tilted right to left and sloped slightly back to front. So, considering the total experience, Im going to call it a tie! However, if one is playing match play, it is a very good hole as the longer hitter can bring the bunkers into play or have a tough chip back if they go over the green.
The course offers a good variety of shot options, varying lengths par 3s, 4s, 5s, and great movement. Pretty much walking only. Yet there is ample room to play away from the water at Calusa Pines due to the wider fairways. Very fast greens and a firm course. ", This is one of the most unique and elite golf courses in Florida. Calusa Pines is more fun to play whereas a round on the TPC Sawgrass Stadium can feel like one long grinding forced march. The par 3 11th also has a predominantly left list to its green. Played two days after the club championship and it was absolutely diabolical. The elevated tee gives players a good preview of the hole, so take note of the flag placement before committing where to place your tee shot and set yourself for a good chance of closing the front nine with a par.

The condition of the course was as good as you'll see for Florida with one exception: its really cool to have massive waste bunkering but its tough to figure out exactly what materials the bunkers should be.
Best in State:Ranked third, 2011-'22. Sand is prevalent throughout the layout with expansive white bunkering as well as waste areas that are blanketed in pine needles which act as the undergrowth of numerous species of trees and bushes. The dynamite bill alone reached $1m as they blasted through tons of rock to create huge, deep lakes and the fill was then used to create rare Floridian elevation changes.
Camargo is an exclusive club with less than 300 members in northeast Cincinnati that embraces its roots with an old school look and feel including in the wood laced locker room and understated pro shop. 0 people found this review helpful The Takeaway: Calusa Pines features elevation changes you generally don't find in Florida, elite level conditioning, and enough sand to make the Sahara Desert jealous. The sixth hole is a par 5 of 545/515 requiring one to either lay up short of the bunkers on the right side of this dogleg right or carry them. The elevation change comfortably accounts for a half club difference, and perhaps a full club for some players, so you'll want to adjust accordingly. Missing the green to the right will likely mean the ball will end up 30 or 40 yards away.
Was this review helpful? Putts hit on the edge of the cups are not likely to go in due to the green speeds. Thirteen is my least favorite hole on the course, a horseshoe shaped par 5 of 627/586 to the right where the big hitters can hit over the palm trees and mangroves on the right to reach the fairway and avoid one of the largest sand/waste areas one will ever see. Calusa Pines joins the Streamsong courses as having some of the best elevation changes and hole designs in the state of Florida and is unquestionably one of the best courses and clubs in the Sunshine State. Calusas developer, Gary Chensoff, a Chicago venture capitalist, survived a rare form of cancer despite long odds, and his recovery strongly influenced how Calusa Pines was designed and built. This par 4 dogleg right of 436/390 has a bunker at the front middle of the green that catches a lot of balls. The Gordons weren't the greatest of archit On my ride to Naples I was thinking how lucky I was to be on my way to another of the finest Golf Clubs in the US - this time the exclusive Calusa Pines Golf Club. The fifth hole is a substantial dogleg right with mounds down the right inside the tree line and sand down the entire right side. The par 5 6th, stay left off the tee.
Once inside it is absolutely a stunning place that words just won't do justice, but I'll make the effort to paint a picture.
The water should not be in play but one is very much aware of it. Hideout is not even in the same area code as for the quality of the golf course. The 12th features the best views and tee shot on the course, so enjoy and do everything you can to avoid a bogey!
Classic clubhouse and locker room and overall feel. Calusa Pines should be rated higher. To Hurdzan/Frys credit the 8th is a short par 4 less than 300 yards. After punching in the secret code on the security box that grants you entry (I'm not telling the code) you see the wrought iron black gates down the private road open slowly enough to allow anticipation to build as you approach (I felt like Charlie in the Willy Wonka movie holding the golden ticket). I'm originally form Naples and this is one of my absolute favorite courses! If you did not know better, you would think you were in the Carolina sandhills. Playing the course feels more like you are in the Carolina pines than you are in Southwest Florida. Special shout out to: #8(short par 4 that is birdie or bogey+), #16 (downhill par 3) and #18 (dogleg left par 5 towards the clubhouse).
Compare it to. Although one often sees the water, Calusa Pines does not incorporate water as much with the possible exception of the fourth hole from the back tee requiring a long carry over water, the fourteenth with water behind the green, the par 3 sixteenth hole, and water on the right for the tee shot on seventeen. They haven't missed the mark on anything here. This really doesn't bother me but I know for a lot of traditional critics this would set the course back quite a bit. 74. Well deserving of its place in the top 100 in the country. The club itself is really cool.

The bold chipper may not hold the green and find their ball coming to rest in the chipping area on the other side of the putting surface.
The 200 yard plus par 3 7th is a monster. The course is among the best maintained I have ever played. One must avoid the trees on the right with the drive.
The green is likely one of the most difficult on the green with a swale on the left leading to a valley of sin and another large bunker right.
Calusa Pines is for serious players. There are severe fall-offs on all sides and an approach shot struck too firmly will likely not stay on the green sloped right to left and front to back with several spines and mounds in it. I suspect those bunkers rarely come into play.

There is adequate room to miss a shot on the right but the green slopes away from you towards the water. There is a large swale to the left of the green and behind and the green has a spine in the middle. Eleven is the third par 3 with water hard against the green on the left side. Fourteen is another short par 4 of 344/293 dogleg left that plays shorter than the yardage.
It was almost impossible to play golf but it was still a real treat to play.
This is among the top 5 courses in the state with a huge demand on accuracy. Dana Fry continues to be hands on at this property and I congratulate his long-term efforts. Calusa is located in Naples, FL and enjoys more elevation changes than most golfers are used to in the Sunshine State. Only small knock is high degree of difficulty around the greens for most golfers. It has a false front as well. Once you get on the golf course, it confirms it.
